[노트펫] 가정집 마당에 들어온 거북이가 퇴비 더미에 38개의 알을 낳았다고 지난달 28일(이하 현지 시각) 미국동물매체 더도도가 보도했다.

최근 미국 매사추세츠주에 사는 여성 코트니 디지오바니(Cortney DiGiovanni)의 집에 뜻밖의 손님이 방문했다.

미국에서는 '무는 거북(snapping turtle)'이라고 불리는 늑대거북 한 마리가 집 마당에 들어온 것이다.

거북이는 진입로에 놓여있던 정원용 퇴비 더미 위에 자리를 잡고 있었다. 

@cortneytayla If anyone has any suggestions and tips on how to manage the next 60 days we would love to hear them 🫠 I have them in a plastic container that  I drilled some holes into on the bottom and sides and covered them about 5 inches below the surface with the same dirt they were in. I have them in the garage slightly covered with the lid making sure the soil says moist and the temp in the garage is around 80 degrees. Hoping that once they hatch we can relocate them to a local pond but until then we are worried that other animals will attempt to eat the eggs since we have a lot of hawks in the area. 디지오바니는 녀석이 그저 밤에 잘 곳을 찾다 우연히 집에 들어온 것이라고 생각했다. 그래서 녀석이 편히 쉬다 갈 수 있도록 음식과 물을 놔준 후 별다른 신경을 쓰지 않았다.

다음 날 아침, 예상대로 거북이는 사라진 상태였다. 그런데 녀석이 있던 자리에는 놀랍게도 알이 남겨져 있었다.

디지오바니와 그녀의 가족들은 예상치 못한 상황에 놀랐지만, 알을 그대로 두면 잘못될 수도 있다는 생각에 무엇을 해야 할지 조사했고 바로 행동으로 옮겼다. 

우선 그녀는 동네의 매나 다른 동물이 알을 먹지 않도록 보호하기로 했다.

그녀는 자신의 틱톡을 통해 "38개의 알을 모두 조심스럽게 용기에 넣었다"며 "알이 손상되지 않도록 붓을 이용해 매우 부드럽게 작업했으며, 배아를 방해하지 않도록 원래 방향을 유지했다"고 설명했다.

We worked with Megan at Maple House Rescue to incubate the eggs and we will be back in about 60 days to release them back into their natural habitat with her! 디지오바니의 아들은 알이 부화할 때까지 돌보고 싶어 했으나, 디지오바니는 전문가가 알을 돌보는 것이 더 안전할 것으로 판단했다.

그녀는 거북이를 구조하고 보호하는 전문단체(Maple House Rescue)의 메건(Megan)에게 도움을 청했다.

이후 디지오바니와 그녀의 아들은 직접 알을 가지고 메건을 찾아갔고, 알들을 무사히 건넨 후에야 집으로 돌아올 수 있었다. 그들은 알이 최고의 환경에서 전문가의 도움을 받을 수 있다는 사실에 기뻐했다.

그녀는 틱톡을 통해 약 60일 정도 후 알이 부화되면 메건과 함께 새끼 거북이들을 자연 서식지로 보내주기로 했다고 전했다.
