[노트펫] 길가에 버려진 상자 안에 웅크리고 있던 아기 수달 두 마리가 무사히 구조됐다고 지난 19일(이하 현지 시각) 미국동물매체 더도도가 보도했다.
최근 한 남성은 영국 슈루즈베리 마을의 번화한 거리를 달리던 중 길가에 놓인 상자 하나를 발견했다.
의아한 마음에 상자를 살펴보러 간 남성은 상자 안에 들어있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 상자 속에는 온몸이 젖은 아기 수달 두 마리가 몸을 웅크린 채 꼭 붙어있었다.
불행하게도 상자에 담겨 버려진 고양이나 강아지를 발견하는 것은 드문 일이 아니지만, 수달이 발견된 건 전례가 없었다.
상자에는 수달을 발견한 사람에게 야생 동물 구조대에 전화해 달라는 메모가 남겨져 있었다.
남성은 즉시 행동에 나서 수달들을 야생동물 구조 센터(Cuan Wildlife Rescue)로 데려갔다.

They were in a cage with a note on the top for someone to call us to rescue them. Luckily they were found by a local man who got them to safety so we were able to rush out to get them! It is unclear how long they had been out there, especially as the weather was awful that night. They were both underweight, lethargic and soaking wet! We got them settled in, warmed up and they started eating well. They have now been transferred to a special Otter rehab facility, the UK Wild Otters Trust, where they will continue to grow and be released again as sadly we do not have the facilities to keep Otters long term! It is illegal to kill, injure or take Otters, as well as other animals, from the wild under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The condition these otters were found in also goes against many animal welfare laws too. Our local Rural Crimes officer has been made aware and an investigation is taking place. 재활센터의 관계자 해티 브레디는 더도도와의 인터뷰에서 "새끼 수달들은 이곳에 도착했을 때 조용하고 소극적이었으며 무서워하고 있었다"고 설명했다.
재활센터의 직원들은 누군가 그렇게 작은 새끼 수달들이 스스로 살아남길 바라며 버려뒀다는 걸 믿을 수 없었다.
야생동물 구조대에 전화해 달라는 메모 대신 직접 센터로 데려오는 것이 그들이 살 확률이 훨씬 더 높았기 때문이다.
브래디는 "우리는 누군가 이 작고 무방비 상태의 동물을 버렸다는 사실에 분노했다"며 "어미 없이 이 녀석들은 오래 살아남을 수 없었을 것이다"라고 말했다.
다행히 재활센터에 도착한 이후 수달들의 상태는 훨씬 나아졌다.
센터 측은 녀석들을 자연 서식지에서 살아남을 수 있는 모든 기술을 배우게 한 후, 약 1년 후쯤 야생으로 돌려보낼 계획이라고 밝혔다.
브래디는 "두 마리가 함께라면 서로 성장하면서 자연스러운 수달 본능을 탐구할 수 있으므로 성공적인 재활이 이뤄질 가능성이 높아진다"고 말했다.
